Wolastoqiyik knew their homeland extremely well. They knew the uniqueness and the secrets of every tree, flower, marsh and stream. They knew the home of every bird and animal, and where medicines could be found.

Throughout the year the people hunted, trapped and fished. In season they gathered the natural foods, medicines and the other necessary raw materials. The people also had specific places for holding the ceremonies so closely connected to their spiritual lives. In the Wolastoqew language there are names for all these places and things. A large number of Wolastoqew place names can still be found on modern maps of New Brunswick.
