Biography
Luke Francis Beirne was born in Ireland and lives in Saint John, New Brunswick, on Wolastoqey land.
His first novel, Foxhunt, was published by Baraka Books in 2022. His second novel, Blacklion, was published in September 2023. His stories, essays, and reviews have appeared in outlets such as Counterpunch, NB Media Co-op, Znet, The Commoner, Hamilton Arts & Letters, Honest Ulsterman, and CrimeReads.
In 2017, Beirne was awarded the David Adams Richards Prize for Prose at St. Thomas University. Foxhunt was a finalist for the 2022 Foreword INDIES award in General Fiction and was selected as one of The Miramichi Reader's best novels of 2022. His novels have been stylistically compared to Hemingway and early [John] le Carré.
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
New Brunswick has influenced my unpublished work, as I have written several stories set in Saint John, which I believe has ripe, largely untapped potential for literary work.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
Nights Below Station Street by David Adams Richards because it is ripe with the seedy, dark underbelly of New Brunswick.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
Publishing two novels so early on.
