Biography
Although born in Sussex, New Brunswick, in 1942, Dr. Belliveau was raised and educated in Moncton, graduating from Moncton High School in 1960. He completed a B.Sc. (1964) and an M.Sc. (1966) at the Université de Moncton and a Ph.D. at Dalhousie University (1972). His 35-year career in the field of water resources began with the Federal Government and later as an independent consultant with various national and international agencies. Concurrently, from 1987 to 2000 he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in water and environmental sciences as an Adjunct Professor at the Université de Moncton. He retired from his scientific endeavors in 2000.
His interest in military history was groomed by his secondary career as a reservist in the Canadian Army. He joined Air Cadets in 1957 and his training culminated in a flying scholarship and a private pilot license in 1959. In 1960, he enrolled in the Army's Canadian Officers Training Corps and over the next 34 years, he served 23 years, in three different time frames, as a militia officer in the Moncton area. The interruptions in military service were the results of civilian employment transfers to other parts of Canada. His last military appointment was as a Senior Staff Officer at the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island District Headquarters. In 1994, he retired from the Reserve Army with the rank of Major.
Dr. Belliveau's hobby over the past forty years has been military history; however, since his retirement the history of military units in the Maritimes has become a consuming activity and in 2010 he co-authored his first book entitled To Kill A Battalion; The Regimental History of 32 (Moncton) Service Battalion. Since then he published H.M.C.S. Coverdale - Riverview's Forgotten Navy Base in 2014 and Percy Guthrie and the MacLean Kilties in 2016. In addition to the above, he published a book, in very, very limited edition, about his father, entitled From Private to Battery Commander: Captain Joseph H. Belliveau's Military Journey (1942-1959). He is presently conducting research on a new book about military units in the Moncton area between 1914 and 1965.
