Biography

Lorne Simon was born on the Elsipogtog First Nation in New Brunswick. He was raised according to Mi'kmaq traditions and was fluent in speaking and writing the Mi'kmaq language. He graduated from the En’owkin International School of Writing in 1992, where he received the Simon Lucas Jr. Award (established by Dr. David Suzuki) for being the top graduate student. His first book, Stones and Switches, was also the first book by an En’owkin graduate to be chosen for publication. Simon was studying for a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of New Brunswick when he was killed in a car accident over Thanksgiving weekend, October 8, 1994.
