Biography

Melvin Gallant was a professor at the Université de Moncton for some thirty years. He has published around twenty works, including the novel Le chant des grenouilles, which received the Prix France-Acadie in 1983. He is known for his involvement in the Acadian cultural scene, having been the founding president of Éditions d'Acadie, the Association des écrivains acadiens and Égalité magazine. He is also known for his stories about a character named “Ti-Jean” (Ti-Jean, contes acadiens, Ti-Jean-le-Fort,) and more recently about “Tite-Jeanne” (Tite-Jeanne et le prince triste, Tite-Jeanne et la pomme d'or, Tite-Jeanne et le prince Igor). His second-to-last novel, Le Complexe d’Évangéline, was published in 2002. Since then, he has begun writing a new Ti-Jean series. Ti-Jean-le-Brave came out in 2005, Ti-Jean-le-Rusé in 2006 and Ti-Jean-l’Intrépide in 2007. In 2009, he published a historical novel called Le Métis de Beaubassin.

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

New Brunswick as such does not figure much in my literary concerns. However, the Acadian region is at the centre of my work. Practically everything I have written, including my latest book, relates in some way to Acadie. All of my children’s books attempt to bring to life stories from traditional Acadian folklore and from the collective memory of Acadians. My adult novels all contain constant references to Acadie.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

For me, the highlight is now. Since, as a rule, we improve with age, I believe Le Métis de Beaubassin is my best written work.
