Biography

Born in Shediac, N.B., in 1918, Emery LeBlanc studied at the Collège Sainte-Anne in Church Point, Nova Scotia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. He began teaching Latin in Moncton-area schools. In 1943, he turned to journalism and joined the staff of L’Évangéline, where he held a variety of positions, including editor in chief (1947) and manager. In 1963, he left to work in public relations for Canadian National, and in 1977 he was named Director of Public Relations for Via Rail Inc., a position he held until his retirement.

During his twenty-year career with L’Évangéline, LeBlanc wrote over 2400 articles and editorials, many of which were vigorous defenses of Acadian rights. Passionate about history, LeBlanc published a series of stories inspired by Acadian life, including Les entretiens du village (1957), Les Acadiens (1963), and La vie à Sainte-Marie (1984); he collaborated on L’histoire du Nouveau-Brunswick, and was also a co-founder of the Société historique acadienne.

For his service to francophones and to society, Emery LeBlanc was awarded numerous awards of distinction, including an honorary doctorate from the Université de Moncton and the Prix Olivar-Asselin from the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal. LeBlanc died in 1987.
