Biography
Born in Tracadie on July 15, 1945, Laval Goupil did his elementary and high school studies in Shippagan, then attended the Université de Sherbrooke and the Université de Moncton.
Cabaret host and director of a number of plays, Laval Goupil showed a great deal of interest in theatre. He played several roles, particularly as part of the Université de Moncton's theatre troupe, and then as part of Le Théâtre amateur de Moncton.
In 1974, he published Tête d’eau and played the role of the hero Onil when the play was performed at the Centre culturel de Moncton. The following year, he published Le djibou, a play written in the language of the Acadians of northeastern New Brunswick, and performed by Les Productions de l’Étoile (Caraquet).
He died in his home in Caraquet, on Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the age of 54, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Excerpt: LA MERE : Eutrope, lui, i’ est cont’ ca que j’vas travailler aux shoppes. I’a pour son dire qu’une femme, sa place, c’est d’rester à la maison. I’ comprend pas le besoin qu’une femme de mon âge peut aouère de sortir pis de s’gagner tchèques cennes pour ses vieux jours…Là, j’ui ai dit : « Écoute-mouâ ben, Eutrope à Nazaire à Joseph à Claphas à Dan l’Araignée à Gros Tchu! J’ai trimé toute ma vie à élever ces enfants-là. I’ m’avont faite souffrir la môrt ben des fouâs pis t’as jamais été assez maudiment père de famille pour m’aider à joind’ les deux boutes dans leûr éducâtion. Ca fait qu’astheûre, qu’i sont grands, bâd’mouâ pus. J’veux pus rien saouère de ton argent pour sortir, m’acheter des hardes pis aouère in peu d’fun pour le temps qui reste. J’irai à la Légion quand j’voudrai pis l’dimanche souère, charche-mouâ pas, j’sus dans l’sous-bassement de l’église à crier : « Bingo! » |
