Biography
A graduate of Saint John High School and Mount Allison University, Mark Blagrave has been a theatre director, university professor and administrator in New Brunswick and Ontario as well as being a playwright, novelist and writer of short fiction. His plays have been seen in community, university, and professional productions at The Delta Brunswick, The Saint John Trade and Convention Centre, Harbour Station, The Playhouse, and at Mount Allison’s Windsor Theatre and Tweedie Hall. His short fiction has appeared in The Fiddlehead, The Dalhousie Review, The Antigonish Review and The New Quarterly, and his novel Silver Salts was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize for Best First Novel (Canada and Caribbean, 2009) as well as the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award at the Atlantic Book Awards. A collection of linked stories,Salt in the Wounds, appeared in 2014, and a second novel, Lay Figures, was published in 2020 and longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award. Felt, his third novel, appeared in 2024.
After nearly ten years of teaching English literature and theatre at UNB Saint John, and twenty years teaching English literature, theatre, film, and creative writing at Mount Allison, and seven years as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science at Huron University College at Western University, Mark has been living and writing since 2016 in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea.
