Biography
Vanessa Moeller's poems and short stories have appeared in numerous periodicals including The Fiddlehead, Prism International, The Antigonish Review, CV2, The Pottersfield Portfolio and Qwerty and have won several awards including the Atlantic Poetry Prize and an honorable mention in the poetry category of the 2010 National Magazine Awards. Her first poetry collection was published by Signature Editions in 2009 and is entitled Our Extraordinary Monsters. She has worked on Qwerty and The Fiddlehead and as associate poetry editor for Goose Lane Editions. She completed her MA in creative writing at the University of New Brunswick. She was raised in Sussex and graduated from Sussex Regional High School. She now lives in Fredericton and maintains a studio in Moncton.
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
Growing up in a bilingual province and speaking three languages has been very influential. I am extremely thankful that my parents made sure I spoke German and that I had the opportunity to learn both English and French in school. It has made me incredibly aware of the potential and limits of language, a theme I continue to explore in my work.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
Herménégilde Chiasson's Conversations - the French original and its English translation - is one of my favourites because it is intensely intelligent, observant and eloquent.
