Biography
Brent Sherrard was born in Miramichi, N.B., and has spent the majority of his life surrounded by the natural splendor of the area.
Growing up in a small rural community nestled on the banks of the beautiful Miramichi River, he developed an appreciation and respect for nature at a very young age.
After graduating from Miramichi Valley High School in 1978, Brent spent a few years travelling the country, working at a variety of jobs.
Married to author Valerie Sherrard, they live an idyllic life, sharing their home and love with 4 wonderful cats. Life is good!
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
I think that the brutal honesty of the people I grew up with, and around, has influenced my writing style. The people of the Miramichi are hard-working, generally unpretentious individuals who meet life eye to eye. The amazing natural beauty of the area keeps me in a constant state of appreciation. It truly inspires everything in my world.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
My favourite New Brunswick novel is the only book I’ve read three times (so far), David Adams Richards’ Mercy Among the Children. He has captured the essence of people who face a life of diverse challenges, each one conquering, or failing to transcend, on their own.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
I would have to say having my first novel published, but a very close 2nd would be winning the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick’s prize for children’s writing in 2006, for the juvenile novel, Rabbit Boy.
