Biography

Claude LeBouthilier was born in Bas-Caraquet. After finishing high school in Bas-Caraquet, he studied at Collège de Bathurst (Bachelor of Arts), at the Université de Moncton (Psychology), at Temple University in Philadelphia and at Paris X-Nanterre.

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

Acadie has had a considerable influence on my work, as is evident in my historical novels, love stories, those that look at society and what we are becoming, not to mention my poetry, which speaks of daily life, the sea and romanticism.

I came back to live in New Brunswick because I could no longer dissociate my writing from my place of origin and my everyday life.

What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?

My favourite book: L’Acadie perdue by Michel Roy. The writing is sublime, the analysis forceful, though it was not nuanced enough with respect to religious influences. I hope, however, that he is not right about the future of Acadie, as he worries about our survival.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

The fact that ordinary people, who are touched by my writing, encourage me to keep going. The Order of Canada, which emphasizes my contribution, as a novelist, chronicler and poet, to Canadian literature, as well as to the renewal of the Acadian novel.

Karma et coups de foudre
(2007)
Excerpt:
