Biography

Born in Saint John and graduated from Saint John High School in 1971. Attended Dalhousie University for a Bachelor of Science in 1974, and then Dalhousie Medical School for my MD in 1978. A Family Physician for 20 years in Saint John until a brainstem stroke at the age of 45 forced me to retire.

At present, I reside with my wife Jill in Rothesay.

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

New Brunswick is of course the setting for my memoir. New Brunswick is the place I was born, grew up, worked, and now reside.

I finished a work of fiction that is now in the editorial process, The Dove’s Eye. It is set in rural New Brunswick, on the Kingston Peninsula, a place I spent all my childhood summers. My imagination was on the peninsula when I wrote this book.

What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?

My favourite New Brunswicker books would have to be The Lost Highway or The Friends of Meager Fortune or Mercy Among the Children all by David Adams Richards. The books are about ordinary New Brunswick people we see around us every day, and the author makes their lives and stories interesting, dramatic, and often tragic.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

I am a doctor. The highlight of my career has been the honour that I have had interacting with my many patients over twenty years. I was honoured by the trust, respect, and friendship they so freely gave me.

As an author, the highlights have been the many people who have taken the time to tell me how touching and inspiring Locked In Locked Out was for them.
