Biography

I was born in 1974 in Saint John, NB, and grew up in Rothesay. I attended Kennebecasis Valley High School, and then went on to get degrees from Carleton University in Ottawa and York University in Toronto. I currently live in Mississauga, ON, with my wife and daughters Hadley and Harper. I have five novels: The Moon is Real (Urban Farmhouse Press, 2016), The Goon (Oberon Press, 2010), A Place of Pretty Flowers (Oberon Press, 2007), The Dirty Milkman (Oberon Press, 2005), and The Making of Harry Cossaboom (DreamCatcher Publishing, 2000).

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

Saint John and the surrounding area has been the setting for all of my novels. I use real places and sometimes real people.

What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?

Anything by David Adams Richards. Why? Because he sets the bar for the rest of us. I can't pick a favourite of his as there are too many, but I especially love For Those Who Hunt The Wounded Down, Hope in the Desperate Hour, The Friends of Meager Fortune, and The Bay of Love and Sorrows.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

I've had a few moments that stick out to me. The first was getting an offer to publish with Oberon Press; that was a real jump for me. The second was winning the Richards Prize; I put a lot of work into that manuscript and it was very rewarding to be recognized for it. The third was signing with my current publisher, Urban Farmhouse Press; it's an eager literary press open to the US market and I'm excited to be a part of that. Fourth, being shortlisted for the ReLit Award in 2011; that was my first taste of national exposure. On top of all of that, becoming friends with my literary hero (Richards) ain't too shabby either.
