Polling Station Positions
Constable
The Constable is the first person an elector will meet when entering a polling station. As such, the person must be, among other things, friendly and courteous. While not required to be bilingual, the Constable must greet and direct electors in both official languages with an active offer of service (e.g. "Hello-Bonjour"). The constable then directs the elector to the appropriate poll worker who can serve the elector in their language of choice. Responsibilities of a Constable include:
- preparing the polling station
- maintaining order at the polling station
- greeting electors in both official languages and directing electors appropriately based on their official language of choice
- assisting disabled voters
- cleaning up the polling station after the poll closes
Voters List Officer
The Voters List Officer is responsible for finding the elector’s name on the List of Electors. Electors whose names are on the list are struck off the List of Electors. They are then directed to a Ballot Issuing Officer. Those whose names are not on the list are directed to the Poll Revision Officer. Responsibilities of a Voters List Officer include:
- setting up their station, including the Poll Pad (iPad)
- looking up electors on the Poll Pad
- striking names off the List of Electors using the Poll Pad
- directing electors to the Ballot Issuing Officer
- closing their station, including the Poll Pad
- completing departure steps
Poll Revision Officer
The Poll Revision Officer is responsible for correcting electors’ information on, and adding electors to, the List of Electors. The Poll Revision Officer is also responsible for collecting information on other electors that an elector may have (e.g.: electors who have moved or passed away). Poll Revision Officers also perform all of the functions of the Voters List Officer (e.g. striking off the names of electors and directing them to a Ballot Issuing Officer). Responsibilities of a Poll Revision Officer include:
- setting up their station, including the Poll Pad (iPad)
- looking up electors on the Poll Pad
- adding electors to the List of Electors using the Poll Pad
- correcting elector information using the Poll Pad
- collecting other elector information
- striking names off the List of Electors using the Poll Pad
- directing electors to the Ballot Issuing Officer
- closing their station, including the Poll Pad
- completing departure steps
Ballot Issuing Officer
The Ballot Issuing Officer is responsible for issuing a ballot, explaining to each elector how to mark it, processing spoiled ballots, and, if requested, assisting electors with voting. Responsibilities of a Ballot Issuing Officer include:
- setting up their station
- preparing for voting
- issuing a ballot
- processing a spoiled ballot
- completing advance poll procedures
- completing ordinary poll procedures
- completing departure steps
Tabulation Machine Officers
The Tabulation Machine Officer is responsible for setting up and supervising the tabulation machines and ballot boxes used in polling stations to collect electors’ ballots. They assist electors in depositing ballots properly and must be able to respond to error messages using specific procedures to ensure each elector’s ballot will be counted as the elector intends. Responsibilities of a Tabulation Machine Officer include:
- setting up the ballot box
- setting up and activating the tabulation machine
- on request, discreetly assisting electors in depositing ballots into the tabulation machine
- discreetly responding to error messages as voters deposit ballots
- powering down tabulation machine at the end of the day
Poll Supervisors
Poll Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that the set-up at their polling station conforms to Elections New Brunswick standards and that the conduct of election business is carried out in an efficient, orderly, elector-friendly fashion and in compliance with the law and Elections New Brunswick directives. The Poll Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of all poll workers in their polling station and should have previous experience working at polls. Responsibilities of a Poll Supervisor include:
- performing pre-election day tasks such as collecting poll materials
- setting up the polling station on election day
- monitoring ballot box setup
- monitoring and executing election day activities
- completing advance poll procedures
- completing ordinary poll procedures
- closing polling stations
- returning equipment and materials to returning office
