Description: Shale resources in the Grand Lake - Minto -Chipman area of south central New Brunswick are found associated with Late Carboniferous , fine- to coarse-grained sedimentary rocks of the Minto Formation. The Minto Formation is described by St. Peter (1997a) as ..." grey, red-brown and locally maroon, cross-bedded and horizontal bedded, feldspathic and quartzose arenites and pebble arenites; grey to buff, cross- and horizontal-bedded and massive, polymictic competent rounded-clast (granule to cobble) conglomerate; lesser grey to red-brown, ripple- and parallel-laminated, fine-grained sandstone and siltstone and lesser laminated mudstone and shale; minor nodular pedogenic calcrete and thin coal seams."
The coal seams within the Minto strata have been mined for many years. To provide for working space in the mining of the coal seam, a tremendous tonnage of overlying sedimentary rock including shale is normally removed by large drag line excavators. The coal seam(s) is generally overlain by shale which is excavated and placed temporarily on top of waste rock piles adjacent coal cuts to be utilized along with other excavated materials for reclamation purposes. The thickness of the overshale is quite variable however averages 1.5 m. Locally thicknesses up to 5.5 m reported (Leveille 1977, p. 37).
The overshale is typically fine-textured, thin-bedded, and dark grey in color.
The coal seam(s) is also underlain by a hard shale (undershale). This undershale is typically over a metre thick. It weathers rapidly on exposure, breaking down to clay.
Shale resources from this region have been documented and variably evaluated for various end uses. For additional information on each occurrence the reader is directed to Leveille (1977). It is noted that several of these occurrences are no longer accessible and are only reported here to provide insight into various qualitative and other characteristics of the shale resource in this region.
