Create Your Own Coat of ArmsCreate Your Own Coat of Arms:

Grades: Elementary School Level (K-5)
Time Required: One or Two class periods
Materials: Design template; pencils; pencil crayons; markers; etc.

INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT:

Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Identify characteristics of individuals as expressed through symbols.
  • Create simple visual and oral presentations.
Suggested Procedure:
  • Begin by showing the class a series of sample Crests or Coats of Arms (The Canadian Heraldry web site will be particularly helpful). Explain that in past times, people sometimes hung a family shield or crest on their door to let others know who lived there.
  • The assignment will be for each student to design their own personal shield, using the template provided. The template has been divided into six areas. In each, the student should draw a picture, design, or symbol to represent themselves. To assist with the assignment, present the students with the following series of questions to help them decide what to include on their shield:

    1. What do you think is the greatest thing you have done?
    2. What do you think is your ancestors' greatest achievement?
    3. What is your favourite sport?
    4. What animal do you admire the most?
    5. What is the most valuable thing you own?
    6. What flag or flags would show where your ancestors came from?

  • Have the students paint or colour their shield.
  • When completed, they will have their own personal symbol to display on their door!
