History

Welcome to the Andrew & Laura McCain Public Library! We opened to the public in our current facility on April 14, 1984. The library is named in honour of Andrew & Laura McCain, and the building was a gift from the McCain Foundation to the former Village of Florenceville. Laura McCain - or as she is affectionately known around town “Mrs. A.D.” - was the head of the Florenceville Library Association, and her work with the Florenceville Women’s Institute lead to the establishment of the first public library in Florenceville in 1970. Extensive renovations were undertaken in the 1990s, with much of the work funded by donations in honour of the late Peter McCain. Upgrades included the addition of a new children’s area and an accessible entrance, located at the back of the library. This entrance has an automatic door accessible push plate and a ramp, and there is a lift to access the lower floor just inside the back door. The lower level included a programming and exhibition space, which eventually became a non-commercial public art gallery. The Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery (ALMAG) incorporated as a separate organization forming their own board in 2010 and has been a registered charity since 2016. The gallery features work by pre-eminent New Brunswick artists as well as local artists and artisans. Exhibits range from contemporary to work of historical significance, fine craft to folk. Admission is free and the gallery hosts events, guest speakers, and innovative and educational workshops throughout the year. In recent years the library has benefitted from the support of the Carleton North Community Foundation, specifically the creation of the ‘Information Station’ in 2012 and the children’s room revitalization project in 2015. We are grateful for the ongoing support of the District of Carleton North, and look forward to serving the community for years to come!
