Biography

I am originally from the tiny fishing hamlet of Dipper Harbour, NB, [but I] left to pursue a hockey dream. There were plenty of hockey addresses before understanding a career in something else was going to pay a few more bills. I graduated from St. Malachy's Memorial High School in Saint John. [I then] studied journalism with a minor in photography before embarking on my media career with the NB Telegraph Journal and the Saint John Evening Times Globe. I covered professional hockey as the beat writer for the American Hockey League's Saint John Flames. Covering minor pro hockey was the background for my 1999 novel, Overtime.

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

Growing up in rural NB, all I wanted to do was get out! Then, you realize, why? The province is gritty, communicative, beautiful and inspiring. It allowed me a vivid imagination and taught me to organize. It was truly a case of if you want something, do it yourself. The town in Overtime carries plenty of NB and Saint John influences.

What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?

The Weight by Bill Gibson. Phenomenal.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

Can I say being the parent of three amazing women? I loved the process of writing Overtime, the book tour, media sessions etc., but I am proud of the fact I come from a tiny lobster fishing community [and] can hold my own at any event from getting hands dirty to emceeing the Atlantic Journalism Awards and being invited back! As I age, it's not necessarily wisdom I have accrued, but confidence and happiness. Give me a dog, a cup of tea and away we go!
