Biography
Frederick was born in Campbellton, NB. He completed his studies at various universities: Brevet A at University of Quebec (Rimouski, QC); B.A. at St. Thomas University; Masters at St. Francis Xavier. He won the Edwin Flaherty Prize (STU) for Creative Writing (1978) and the Alfred G. Bailey Prize for best poetry manuscript (Writers’ Federation of NB, 2014) [for his work] entitled Seasons of Diversity.
His poetry has appeared in several literary magazines in Canada and the United States (The Antigonish Review, CV2 [Contemporary Verse 2], Other Voices, The Cormorant, The Gaspereau Review, The Nashwaak Review, The River (University of Maine), Southern Poetry Review (Georgia), Cede Poetry, Undertow, Amethyst Review, and so forth).
In earlier years Frederick ran a children's column (Tot Spot) in a northern NB newspaper called The Tribune. In later years he was a columnist for a weekly Christian column entitled Catch the Light for 10 years. In that same time period, he co-hosted a Christian radio program with his wife Sarah, likewise called Catch the Light, for 10 years.
After many attempts at submitting to WFNB competitions, Seasons of Diversity won the Alfred G. Bailey prize for best poetry manuscript. That effort embodied numerous categories of poems addressing a number of seasons in nature, seasons of winter, spring summer and fall. Other seasons included seasons of war, of the river, of trees, and the many different seasons of life which so affect the life of a person.
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
New Brunswick newspapers in some early writings, New Brunswick literary journals like The Cormorant, The Nashwaak Review, The New Brunswicker (along with out-of-country and out-of-province journals) showed themselves to be open to receiving and sometimes publishing various submissions. The Writers' Federation of NB has always been one of the great organizations in the province as regards its annual competitions. Over the years their personnel have been the most helpful and accommodating staff I have ever encountered. In bygone years, the Maritime Writers' Workshop held at UNB during the summer breaks provided many opportunities to sit under some of the greater Canadian poets and authors. In addition to the foregoing, NB poets and writers like Robert Gibbs, Joe Blades, Tish Thornton, Roger Moore, David Gates, Prof. Donahue (among others) and Canadian poets like Robin Sarah and Erin Moure.
