Biography
I was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, spent summers on the Saint John River, and moved back to Saint John in 2003. I have published two poetry collections (Long Girl Leaning into the Wind, Killick Press, 2000 – which was shortlisted for the Newfoundland & Labrador Book Award – and Shiftless, Guernica Editions, 2014) and I was the founding editor of the Canadian Literature Index, ECW Press. I have also published feature articles, book and movie reviews, short stories, and memoir pieces. I have read my poems at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and Memorial University as well as at public libraries in St. John's [N.L.] and Saint John [N.B.], and many other venues. My poetry has been published in many literary journals and in several literary anthologies.
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
I have written poems based on the beauty of the Saint John River Valley, the lives of my relatives and ancestors in Saint John, and historical elements of the city.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
Anything written by Alden Nowlan – one of Canada's great poets.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
I am very pleased by the early response to my book, Shiftless. It was launched at the Saint John Free Public Library and it was also part of the Lorenzo Society’s prestigious Reading Series at UNB Saint John. It was also launched by Guernica Editions in Toronto.
