Biography
Mélanie Daigle is a native of Moncton, New Brunswick. She loves stories of all kinds – whether it’s in the form of books, films, theatre, or songs and stories about people and nature - the Acadian author soaks it all up! A teacher by training, she has been immersed in the fantasy world of children on a daily basis, and for a number of years now, she has delved into it herself.
Mélanie has published two children’s books with Bouton d’or Acadie, the first volume of a triology with Éditions du Phoenix de Montréal, and a multilingual CD/book with CAFI and the Francophone Sud school district. She wrote one play, Entretemps, for the Théâtre de l'Escaouette’s Festival à haute voix, and one for the Capital School of Performing Arts. Just recently, Mélanie began writing songs for children and for the general public. Her first song, “Un arbre je suis,” was performed by Janine Boudreau during her return to the stage in the spring of 2013. As an author, Mélanie has also represented the Atlantic provinces in a collective story-writing project sponsored by the Association Canadienne d’Éducation de Langue Française (ACELF).
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
I am convinced that my proximity to nature had an influence on my work. Although I grew up within the Moncton city limits, Ryan Street used to be basically rural. We had chickens and a large garden. When growing up, I always took that direct contact and interaction with nature for granted. It’s only now that I realize how lucky we are in Acadie.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
One of my favourite New Brunswick books is La tailleuse de clés by Fernande Chouinard, published by Éditions Perce-Neige. There’s a certain beauty in the way she writes that I like, the humanity that emerges is almost palpable.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
My career has only just begun, but I dare say that what I like the most is to share my stories with others. Nothing makes me happier than when someone tells me that, in some way, my writing has resonated with them.
