Édith Bourget was born in Lévis, Quebec, and now lives and creates in Edmundston, New Brunswick, through her writing, painting, and travelling. As a creator, she has chosen to sing the praises of life with the hope that it will inspire others to protect it.

From poetry collections to novels and albums, Bourget has published several books for young people. She has also illustrated some of these books, including Des oiseaux et des plumes. Her first poetry collections, Autour de Gabrielle and Les saisons d’Henri, were finalists for the Governor General's Literary Awards. She received the Prix France-Acadie for Autour de Gabrielle in 2004. She also received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the New Brunswick Arts Board, the Société Nationale de l’Acadie, and the Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles. She has been asked to participate in festivals and tours in Canada (WordFest, Vancouver International Writers Festival, Blue Metropolis, Fry Festival, Lire à tout vent, Idélire) and abroad (La Bataille des Livres, Switzerland). She has participated in 150 exhibitions in Canada and abroad. In art and in life, she has an appreciation for the sincerity of actions and words.

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

I have lived in New Brunswick since 1985, but I consider myself a citizen of the world. I talk about many places in my books, and New Brunswick is one of them. In Lola et le fleuve (Bouton d’or Acadie), our province takes centre stage. Lola, a young Parisian, comes to spend a year in Edmundston with her parents. She discovers another culture and friendship, and learns that she has brothers and sisters all over the world.

What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?

I really enjoy everything that Hélène Harbec writes. Her literary approach can be best described as intelligent and sensitive. For children’s literature, Annie a deux mamans by Denise Paquette was an important book. Published in 2003 by Bouton d'or Acadie, this novel deals with female homosexuality, a subject that is rarely discussed.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

Being nominated for the Governor General's Literary Awards for Autour de Gabrielle and Les saisons d’Henri, receiving the Prix France-Acadie pour Autour de Gabrielle, being nominated for the Prix TD de littérature canadienne pour l’enfance et la jeunesse for the collaboration Oh! La vache! Were thrilling moments for me. The GG and the TD are the largest prizes in Canadian children's literature.

Poèmes des mers
(2012)
Excerpt:

Le bateau de ma vie
Je me demande
où m’amènera
le bateau de ma vie.
Quand j’aurai grandi,
je larguerai mes amarres
et suivrai ma bonne étoile,
au hasard des vents,
suivant les courants.

J’explorerai les mers,
la cale de mon navire
chargée de rêves et de beautés
que je distribuerai
au fil de mes voyages
à de nouveaux amis.

Heureuse, je partirai.
Toujours, je reviendrai.
Mon cœur est un bateau
ancré en Acadie.
