Biography
Cathy Brown Murphy was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, but has spent much of her life in Moncton, New Brunswick. She attended Moncton High School and graduated from Mount Allison University. She currently resides in Moncton with her husband, Jim, four cats, and a rabbit.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
My favorite New Brunswick book is Kate by Valerie Sherrard. Published in 2003, it is one of her earlier works, a moving story of a young girl who is dying. Kate’s story is honest, but also humorous; she is making the most of the time she has been given. Valerie Sherrard’s characters are deftly drawn, their sometimes wry observations ring true. Clearly her own life experiences have given her the sensitive touch required to deal with a difficult subject. I would recommend this book to readers of any age.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
A highpoint would certainly be my nomination for the Hackmatack prize in 2004. It was a delight to meet so many enthusiastic readers and having the award ceremony here in Moncton made it even more special.
