Biography

An Acadian born in New Brunswick and an accomplished globe-trotter, Jocelyne Mallet-Parent lives in the Gaspé Peninsula. Following a brilliant career in education in New Brunswick (teacher, principal, superintendent, and Assistant Deputy Minister of Education), she took up writing soon afterward.

She won the Prix France-Acadie in 2007 for her first work, a social novel entitled Sous le même soleil (Lévis: Éditions de la Francophonie, 2006). This was followed by L’Éclaboussure / Ariane in 2007. Her third novel, Dans la tourmente afghane (Ottawa: Éditions David, 2009), borrows from both the psychological drama and action novel genres, with a few touches of a thriller thrown in.

In addition to taking part in several book fairs in New Brunswick, Quebec, and France, Jocelyne Mallet-Parent is a member of the AAAPNB, UNEQ, and is president of the Regroupement des auteurs de la Gaspésie (RAG).

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

Having spent my whole career in education, I never missed an opportunity to encourage the cause of literacy. I wanted to share my passion for the French language with students by trying to instill in them the importance of knowing how to communicate and a concern for using quality language.

One of the highlights of my education career was having the opportunity to extend the reach of my work to the international Francophonie as a national correspondent for CONFEMEN (the oldest institution of the Francophonie working to promote education in French-speaking countries).

The highlight of my new career as a novelist has been viewing a photograph of a class of high school students reading my first novel, their eyes riveted to the pages of Sous le même soleil. At once I had a strong feeling of having achieved my objectives: getting young people to read! I love that picture and was deeply moved by it.

Dans la tourmente afghane
(2009)
Excerpt:
