Biography

Paul Marlowe’s short fiction has been published around the world. His third book, the steampunk collection Ether Frolics, is representative of this international popularity, containing stories that first appeared in magazines in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and South Africa, as well as previously unpublished stories. Ether Frolics was called "…a true jaw-dropping jewel of a book…" by Doctor Fantastique's Show of Wonders reviewer Aly Grauer.

His teen steampunk series The Wellborn Conspiracy, set in 1880s Nova Scotia, has received widespread critical approval; the first volume in the series, Sporeville, was included in Resource Links magazine’s Year’s Best list for 2007, and the sequel, Knights of the Sea, has been called “drily hilarious…reminiscent of Neil Gaiman’s lighter works" (Kelly Lasiter, fantasyliterature.com), “a fast-paced blend of action-adventure, fantasy and historical novel, with the added elements of erudition, humour and wit” (Ruth Latta, CM Magazine), and “Fun reading that will delight fans of Phillip Pullman” (Lois McNicol, TriState Reviews). The radio play produced of his short story “The Resident Member” has been broadcast on radio stations in Canada and the United States, and was called an “instant classic” by Sonic Society. How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

Certainly the landscape has influenced it; the terrain of my first novel Sporeville, while fictional, was created from a mixture of New Brunswick landscapes, including Cape Enrage in Albert County and the Tantramar area in Westmorland County.
