Ricky (Rick) John Brewer is the eldest and only son of seven children; he is the son of the late Richard C. Brewer and Emma Hanson of Zealand, NB.

Mr. Brewer worked in the grocery industry for over 26 years before entering politics, first in the wholesale business at Willett Foods, and at The Food Group Inc. After working in several facets of the wholesale food business, Rick subsequently entered the retail market where he became manager, then went on to become supervisor, of a chain of convenience stores throughout central New Brunswick for P.E. Drummond Ltd.

Presently Rick and his wife Ruth own the Taxis River Convenience Store located in Boiestown, the geographical heart of the province.

Rick has been actively involved in his community where he has organized a variety of functions for both youth and adult groups. He has been a counselor, as well as a cook, at children’s camps in New Brunswick and Quebec. He has also been a Sunday school teacher at all grade levels for over 25 years. Rick also served as an assistant pastor at Life Tabernacle Church in Fredericton.

One of the things Rick enjoys is singing, which he does on a regular basis at his church as well as several community functions throughout the Miramichi River Valley.

Mr. Brewer is the Liberal MLA for Southwest Miramichi. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the provincial general election held June 9, 2003. He was a member of the Standing Committee on Ombudsman and the Select Committee on Education. As a member of the official opposition, he was the critic for interests relating to the Department of Supply and Services. He also served as a substitute on the Select Committee for Wood Supply in 2004.

He was re-elected to serve in the 56th Legislature in the provincial election held September 18, 2006. In early October 2006 Premier Shawn Graham appointed Rick as government "Whip." Rick served on the following Legislative Committees; Standing Committee on Crown Corporations, Standing Committee on Estimates, Standing Committee on Law Amendments, Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Legislative Officers.

On November 12, 2008, he was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council and appointed Minister of Human Resources and Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat.

Rick has been happily married to Ruth, formerly from Iquitos, Peru, for 30 years. They have two children, Dwayne Brewer; Raquel Adams; a daughter-in-law, Tammy; son-in-law Stuart; grandchildren Connor Richard and Jade Emma.

Rick is a “people person with the people at heart” and is available to his constituents whenever they need him.
