Provincial2010 Heritage Week Planning Kits Now Available
Date : 1/12/2010     Comment(s) : (0)

New Brunswick Heritage Week 2010Planning kits for Heritage Week 2010 are now available, Minister of Wellness, Culture and Sport Hédard Albert announced recently.

"Heritage Week 2010 offers us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate New Brunswick's heritage," said Albert. "I also believe that Heritage Week enables us to develop a better understanding of our collective past so that we are able to look forward to an equally exciting future of self-sufficiency."

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the global village concept, New Brunswick's Heritage Week Committee has developed a heritage resource planning kit that celebrates the theme, "Global Village - village planétaire." The kit includes a special poster, bookmark, event registration form, and information about various other provincial or federal heritage resources available in New Brunswick.

Canadian Marshall McLuhan was the first to popularize the concept of a global village as social network. In 1960, his insights were considered revolutionary, but have since fundamentally changed how we think about ourselves and our province.

"During Heritage Week, Feb. 8 - 15, 2010, I invite you to reflect upon your shared experience of thousands of years of history, and to place that experience within a larger global context," said Albert.

For 110 suggestions on ways to celebrate Heritage Week 2010, visit the Heritage Week 2010 website. Visitors may also download learning resource material, and register their Heritage Week 2010 events. All groups and individuals registering events will be recognized with a certificate of participation.

Those wishing to obtain a Heritage Week 2010 planning kit should contact the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport:

ProvincialThird Space Exhibition Opens at New Brunswick Museum
Date : 1/12/2010     Comment(s) : (0)

New Brunswick Museum

Third Space Gallery in tandem with the New Brunswick Museum is presenting PENTEGOET PARK: THE TERRIBLE ONES from January 13 to February 24, 2010. PENTEGOET PARK: THE TERRIBLE ONES by Goody-B Wiseman is the first exhibition in a four show series, Passages + Prototypes, a partnership between Third Space Gallery and the New Brunswick Museum.

Wiseman documents the life of a fictional colony of feral children in her mini-museum, through artifacts, illustrations, dioramas, audio/video documentation, and stories. The children in this colony were raised in the wild by adoptive animal parents. These children were all subsequently rescued from the wild and brought to civilization for study and rehabilitation. Pentegoet Park is the place where the feral children who have been able to escape the rigors of socialization have found shelter and solace together. Wiseman uses the conventions of museum display more typical of the 19th century to give a comprehensive view into the curious world of the feral children, including Gazelle Girl, Badger Boy and Coyote Kid. Wiseman comments that “The Terrible Ones investigates age-old questions about the essential nature of man that the archetype of the Wild Child inevitably raises.”

Third Space President Alison Gayton says that “we are very excited about the Passages + Prototypes series, which we expect will have a synergistic effect on Third Space Gallery, the New Brunswick Museum and all of Saint John.”  New Brunswick Museum CEO Jane Fullerton commented that “by working with Third Space Gallery to present this unique exhibition series, which features contemporary sculptural and multi-media works, we will attract new audiences to the Museum.”  Elements of the exhibitions will also be displayed in Third Space’s ATM window space at 40 Charlotte Street.

Third Space Gallery receives financial assistance from The Canada Council for the Arts, annual funding support from the Province of New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport and support from the Telegraph Journal, Punch Productions and UNBSJ.

NBSHF launches “50/50" "The Golden Anniversaries of Willie O’Ree and Yvon Durelle” an on-line exhibit which is part of the Virtual Museums of Canada, Community Memories Program. The exhibit will highlight the important contributions which both O’Ree and Durelle made to New Brunswick’s sport heritage, and how their success in sport and their sto-ries have inspired others in their communities and far beyond. Both men have become sports legends, but were once underdogs who persevered against great odds and in doing so emerged as cultural icons.

ProvincialProvincial Archives Website Launches Historical Legislative Assembly Proceedings
Date : 1/12/2010     Comment(s) : (0)

Provincial Archives of New BrunswickA large addition of historical legislative assembly proceedings has been launched on the Provincial Archives website. Premier Shawn Graham and Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty celebrated the occasion recently at the Provincial Archives.

The new content includes the entire body of information produced by and presented to the New Brunswick legislative assembly from 1786 to 1833.

"It is so timely that this collection of New Brunswick's historical records can be made available during our province's 225th anniversary year," said Graham. "Providing New Brunswickers, as well as researchers and historians around the world, with online access to these documents is an incredible achievement, and I thank the staff and friends of the Provincial Archives for their painstaking efforts to make this a reality."

The records were among the first acquired by the Provincial Archives when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then they have been meticulously researched, described, microfilmed and digitized, and now about 65,000 pages related to a largely unexplored period of New Brunswick history have been placed on the Provincial Archives website and are accessible via a searchable database.

Among the thousands of documents are pieces of legislation that established New Brunswick's first counties and the provincial justice system; the province's first conservation laws; bills related to the day-to-day operations of government that were sent to legislators for payment; and documents providing considerable information regarding such natural disasters in the province as the Great Miramichi Fire of 1825.

In addition to the textual records, the website will also include a new photo gallery of early New Brunswick scenes, individual portraits, and maps.

"These records shed new light on the evolution of responsible government here in New Brunswick, and the stories of the people our earliest provincial governments were elected to represent," said Doherty. "They are a wonderful gift to current and future generations of New Brunswickers who wish to learn more about our province and its people."

This project was made possible through the assistance of the Canadian Culture Online Program of Canadian Heritage, Library and Archives Canada, and the Canadian Council of Archives.

The new records may be viewed on the Provincial Archives website.
