Biography
I have lived in Moncton, NB, most of my life and spent 28 years teaching in Moncton schools, mainly at the high school level. I attended Harrison Trimble High School and came full circle and retired from teaching at Harrison Trimble in 2005.
Over the years, I championed Canadian literature and began the first Canadian Literature course taught at HTHS. I always kept a classroom library in my room and loved to help students find just the right book to read. Nothing was more gratifying to me than to have a student return a book and say, "This was really good."
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
New Brunswick has influenced my work because the people, at least the ones I focus on, are authentic. I am not interested in the lives of the rich and famous. Ordinary people – their experiences, struggles and small victories resonate with me. I've long believed that everyone has a story. And as a writer, I'm finding out over and over again how true that is.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
My favourite New Brunswick book is The Nine Lives of Charlotte Taylor by Sally Armstrong. It is historical fiction at its finest. The resilience and perseverance of the main character and her struggles in the wilds of New Brunswick were vividly told.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my writing career so far, is having my first book immediately accepted by a commercial publisher. I worked for three years on Memories on the Bounty and was thrilled by the publisher's enthusiastic response.

Excerpt: I was on this journey with Roy for just over a year – roughly equivalent to the time he spent on Bounty. I began this project in much the same way Roy began his travels on Bounty – naïve, hopeful, in many ways completely unprepared for what lay ahead. Roy often spoke about the great privilege it was to sail on Bounty. Likewise, I feel privileged to have been on this voyage with Roy. On Monday mornings, I was able to leave behind the complicated, messy world in which we live. For a few hours, I sat in the cozy living room with my friend and sipped coffee while we drifted away to the happy world of Tahiti and the glory days of Bounty. |
