Biography

Born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, Émerise LeBlanc-Nowlan grew up near the ocean and spent much of her life in a small village called Saint-Antoine, where she went to elementary school. After that, she completed her high school studies in Bouctouche.

The mother of three children and grandmother of a little girl, the author has worked as a nurse for 30 years.

She is now pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in arts, which had been a long-time dream.

How has New Brunswick influenced your work?

The author discovered nature in early childhood, spending her time by the sea and in the forest, hence her strong connection with those elements. Most of her stories are inspired by her personal experiences between the ages of 4 and 8.

What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?

The book Love, written and illustrated by Lesley Johnson and published by Bouton d’or Acadie in 2003. This preference is based on the simplicity of the text, its profoundness and symbolism, all enriched by superb illustrations, and the text leaves us with a mystery to be solved. That’s why it’s always on my bookshelf.

What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?

Of course, it’s being able to tell stories to children, but becoming a published author opened my eyes to a whole new world. Discovering the world of publishing, meeting authors, and participating in book fairs in New Brunswick and elsewhere are rewarding and exciting experiences.

The greatest joy was to discover the world of giving workshops in the schools and to see the children’s spark and enthusiasm as they participated eagerly in the activities suggested.

Le papillon multicolore
(2010)
Excerpt:
