Biography
Douglas Lochhead (1922-2011) was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a life-member of the League of Canadian Poets. Born in Guelph, Ontario, he served as an infantry and artillery officer in the Canadian Army during World War II. He was a graduate of McGill University and the University of Toronto. He taught English and was a member of the library staffs of universities in Canada, the United States, and Scotland. In 1975, Lochhead became the Davidson Professor of Canadian Studies at Mount Allison University, and lived in Sackville, New Brunswick, from that time, where he was appointed the town's official poet laureate. From 1987 to 1990 he was the first writer-in-residence at Mount Allison University, and was a Professor Emeritus at Mount Allison, as well as a Senior Fellow and Founding Librarian of Massey College, University of Toronto. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977, the The Bibliographical Society of Canada's Marie Tremaine Medal in 1985, and honorary doctorates from Saint Mary's University, Dalhousie University, and the University of New Brunswick.
How has New Brunswick influenced your work?
My mother was born in the province, and growing up we spent our summers in Fredericton and Saint John. Mother's stories and family established a deep and lifelong attachment to New Brunswick. Many of my works have been shaped by the landscapes of the Tantramar Marshes and the Fundy coast.
What is your favourite New Brunswick book, and why?
I don't know if I could pick a single book. Among my favourite writers, though, is the poet Charles G.D. Roberts.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
My time at Massey College (where I was one of the founding librarians), and the friendship I established there with Robertson Davies.
